I read '1 2 3 Magic' a few years ago. My wife and I have been using a system similar to this with our two children and the results have been mostly positive. We have a 3 year old and a 1.5 year old. The three year old generally listens before we get to the count of three. With the 1.5 year old, it is more hit and miss. Three to 3-1/2 feet. Over the Center Stake or 10-15 feet before. H-5 Stake, about 20 feet, 1/3 distance from the house to the Center and level with the bottom of the window. Halfway back from Hold Point to the window. Three to 3-1/2 feet. Over the Center Stake, or 10-15 feet past it. L-5 1/3 distance from the house to the Center Stake, about 20.
There are probably ten zillion candle spells out there, and a dozen good resources on candle spellcraft. Why not, I thought, make a step-by-step cheat sheet on crafting a spell candle for magical use? So, without, further ado, here's my process for candle magic:
1. Choose your Candle

Depending on the spell or the intent, you'll want to select a color of candle appropriate to your use. Look up the color correspondence for your spell, such as green for prosperity or pink for love, if you need to. If you're not sure, you can always use an all-purpose white candle. If you like, you can also match the candle size to the scale of your spell: Tealights and spell candles for spells and charms, pillars for spells that need to be performed over many days, tapers for spells that a long time to cast, and so on.
2. Mark it Well
Here's where you inscribe your candle with intent. A simple way to do this is to look up the runes pertaining to your intent, then scratching them into your candle. You can also draw them on in color with a good marker or a natural paint such as ground juniper berries. Some Witches swear by a hot needle. If runes aren't your thing, you can write in words, use a sigil, or any other demarkation you like.
3. Anoint your Candle
If you have an oil appropriate to your spell, or you've made one (and I do recommend you do so!), you can dilute it in almond, sesame (not toasted!), olive, jojoba, or virtually any other oil for anointing. To anoint your candle, you can either drop a few drops of your oil on the wick, or get your hands in there and rub the oil deep into the candle to charge it. (If you drew on your candle, use the wick drip method.)
4. Make your Spell
This is my favorite part! Gather any correspondences appropriate to your spell, and arrange them in any way you see fit around the candle. Many Witches like to create a decorative circle. Common items of correspondence you can use in your spell are tarot cards (pick one of the Major Arcana, or perhaps a Court card, that represents your intent), corresponding crystals, corresponding herbs, and corresponding flowers and plants. You can, of course, use any symbol pertaining to your cause that you like! There are several tables, and, of course, searchable resources that you can go through to find the right correspondences, such as the herbs for Athena or the right crystals for protection magic.
Then - light your candle at the right magickal time, focus your intent, and enjoy your spellcasting. Simple as that!
